An Alternative to Full Extraction
A coronectomy is a specialized alternative to full wisdom tooth extraction in cases where the roots of the tooth are positioned very close to an important nerve. Rather than removing the entire tooth, the crown is removed while the roots are intentionally left in place to reduce the risk of nerve injury. At South Florida Institute of Oral Surgery, coronectomy may be recommended when it offers a safer approach for the patient.
Protecting the Nerve
This procedure is most often considered when imaging shows that full removal of the roots could place the inferior alveolar nerve at unnecessary risk. By preserving the roots under controlled conditions, the surgeon can address the problematic part of the tooth while protecting nearby anatomical structures.
