An oral biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from the mouth or jaw and sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. This helps identify the cause of an unusual lump, persistent sore, red or white patch, or other tissue change and determine whether treatment is needed.
At South Florida Institute of Oral Surgery, our surgeons carefully evaluate the area and explain whether a biopsy is appropriate. Depending on the size, location, and appearance of the finding, we may remove a small portion of tissue or the entire growth. Many oral biopsies can be performed using local anesthesia to numb the area.
After the procedure, we provide instructions to help you care for the biopsy site. Once the laboratory results are available, our team will explain the findings and discuss any recommended treatment or follow-up. Our goal is to provide clear answers and help you feel informed and supported throughout the process.
