Visiting an oral surgeon can feel a little intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. At the South Florida Institute of Oral Surgery, our mission is to make your experience smooth, transparent and reassuring from the moment you walk through the door. Whether you’re coming in for wisdom teeth removal, an implant evaluation or another procedure, here’s a breakdown of what to expect at your first consultation.
Before you arrive
- Please bring a form of ID, your insurance card (if applicable) and any records or imaging you already have — photos, X-rays or referrals from your dentist.
- If you take medications or have a health condition (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, heart issues, smoking, etc.), make sure we know ahead of time.
- Note down any questions you have — about anesthesia, recovery, costs, alternative options or timing.
Arrival and registration
When you arrive at our Coral Springs or Pompano Beach office, our team will welcome you, check in your paperwork and give you details about what comes next. We will make you feel comfortable and take a few minutes to review your health history and current concerns.
Clinical evaluation & imaging
One of our board-certified oral surgeons will meet with you face-to-face. They will discuss:
- The reason for referral or your concern (pain, missing teeth, impacted teeth, etc.)
- A full examination of your teeth, gums, jaw and surrounding structures
- If needed, we’ll take 3D imaging (CBCT) to get a comprehensive view of jawbone, sinuses, nerves and relevant anatomy
- Discussion of any treatment required and options available (including conservative vs surgical)
- Explanation of anesthesia/sedation options (local, IV, general) and sedation safety protocols
Treatment plan discussion
We believe in transparency. After assessment, the surgeon will walk you through:
- What they recommend and why — e.g., extraction, implant, graft, etc.
- What to expect during the procedure (time, anesthesia, immediate after-care)
- Recovery timeline (days off work, swelling, diet, restrictions)
- Costs, insurance coverage, payment options and financing (if applicable)
- Risks/benefits and what happens if you delay the treatment
Questions & next steps
We encourage you to ask any question you have. A few we often hear:
- “What if I wait a few more months—will anything change?”
- “Is sedation safe for me?”
- “How long does recovery take and when can I return to work/sports?”
- “Will I have pain afterward and what medications will I need?”
- “How many appointments will I need and what’s the timeline?”
Once you’re ready, our team will schedule the procedure (if you decide to move forward) and provide pre-op instructions (which may include fasting for sedation, arranging transportation, etc.).
